Friday’s roundup: Warren Collegiate blanks Old Redford

Warren Michigan Collegiate tweaked the game plan just enough on a rainy night to shut out hosting Detroit Old Redford, 44-0, on Friday.

The pass was certainly out of the question with the weather not letting up, and that worked to Warren Collegiate’s advantage. Old Redford couldn’t sling the ball like it wanted to with a spread offense.

Not just that, but Warren Collegiate’s ground game racked up over 300 total yards, much to the delight of offensive coordinator Mark Poplawski.

“With the weather being the way it was, we kept the ball on the ground,” Poplawski said. “We were trying to keep the game plan simple.”

Shawn Jackson had 13 carries for 108 yards and two scores and Javeonte Brown finished with 103 yards and a score on 16 carries for Warren Collegiate (5-1, 3-0 Charter).

Tracy Hubbard added to the team total with 75 yards and two touchdowns and Ervin Butler carries just twice for 39 yards and a score.

Warren Collegiate’s defense was stout, led by Doug Rogers, who finished with a team-high 13 tackles, two forced fumbles and three sacks.

Old Redford is 2-4, 1-2.

Moving forward, Poplawski feels good about his team’s chances, but the penalties have to cease.

“We’re pretty disciplined but every now and then we do dumb stuff,” Poplawski said. “Our kids really work hard, so we should correct it.”
