Friday's roundup: Detroit C.C.'s quick burst wins it
Orchard Lake — In the span of three plays early in the third quarter Friday night, Detroit Catholic Central went from being tied with Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, 7-7, to being ahead 21-7.
Nick Captiana’s 72-yard touchdown run with 4:04 left in the third quarter gave Catholic Central (7-0, 2-0 Catholic League) the lead. Then, Cameron Ryan punched in a 1-yard touchdown after a fumble by St. Mary’s was returned to the St. Mary’s 1-yard line. With 2:17 left in the third, Catholic Central was on top, 21-7.
C.C. went on to win 28-7.
“That builds great momentum for our team,” Captiana said of his big run. “Our (offensive) line did a great job tonight. They fired up out of that fumble recovery and we punched it in that first play back.”
Captiana finished with 18 carries for 122 yards and two touchdowns.
“We beat a very, very good football team,” Catholic Central coach Tom Mach said. “St. Mary’s is an excellent team every year and they play ‘tough man’ football.”
Quarterback Austin Brown was 10-of-14 for 151 yards and a touchdown.
RaShawn Allen had 20 carries for 86 yards and the only touchdown for St. Mary’s (4-3, 1-1)
Catholic Central was marching on its first drive, going 65 yards in 16 plays. It was in the red zone, but Brown forced a pass that was intercepted in the end zone by Jack Carroll.
“We were going to win the football game, no matter what happened,” Mach said. “We know they can score one or two touchdowns, but we still believe we were going to come back and win.”
Two drives later, St. Mary’s opened the scoring. Allen punched in a 1-yard run, one play after an 11-yard pass from Caden Prieskorn to Kyren Cunningham. St. Mary’s led 7-0 with 4:04 left in the half.
But Catholic Central responded on the ensuing drive.
Brown connected with Isaiah Popp on a 47-yard strike down the left sideline with 1:32 left. After the extra point, the game was tied at 7-7 — a score that carried in to the half.
“We come out every week (and) we practice with the same mindset,” Brown said. “We don’t get too high, we don’t get too low. We stay level. We’re not a cocky team. We just play hard and we go get it.”
Captiana ran in a 9-yard touchdown three plays after a 44-yard pass from Brown to Harding put Catholic Central at the St. Mary’s 21.
