Wednesday’s roundup: Athens soccer wins fourth straight

Two first-half goals from Troy Athens propelled it past Warren De La Salle to a 2-0 victory in a Division 1 boys soccer regional semifinal at Athens on Wednesday.

The win — the fourth in a row, and the third shutout in the last four games for Athens (17-4-2) — ended a five-game winning streak for De La Salle (12-7-2).

Andy Filips scored 55 seconds into the game, giving Athens a 1-0 lead. Sami Sami added a goal about four minutes later, making it 2-0.

Athens plays Macomb Dakota (13-4-3) on Friday in a regional final at Athens. Dakota is on a four-game winning streak after blanking Grosse Pointe North, 4-0 in the first game at Athens on Wednesday afternoon.

Macomb Dakota 4, Grosse Pointe North 0: Brendan Petz scored twice for Dakota. Darko Stojonovski and Luigi Idhia also had goals. North is 10-10-2.
