East English Village used strong defense and a standout performance from C’Erra Maholmes to defeat Detroit Cody, 50-31, on Thursday.

Maholmes had 34 points, including 11 in the pivotal third quarter, when East English (2-0) stretched its lead.

Cody (1-1) jumped out to an early 11-point lead, but East English responded in the second quarter with tough defense from Maholmes, who recorded 10 steals on the night.

“We started sluggish, but C’Erra willed us to win,” coach Sam Hines said. “In the second quarter, we started playing defense, and it slowed down Cody.”

From there, the tough East English defense held Cody to only 12 second-half points.

Feeding Maholmes the ball was guard Jayla Smith, who recorded 10 points and 10 assists.

“Jayla loves passing the ball. She recognized that you’ve got to keep feeding a hot player,” Hines said.

Cody is hard to beat once it gains confidence, the coach said.

“Cody gave us a good game. My girls kind of underestimated Cody, so this was a wake-up call,” he said. “We won with hard-nosed defense and C’Erra getting hot.”

Da’Shawna Fowler scored 10 points for Cody.
