Cass Tech’s Donovan Johnson picks Penn State

Donovan Johnson, a four-star running back / cornerback from Detroit Cass Tech, committed to Penn State on Tuesday night.

Johnson (5-11, 178), who has been timed at 4.35 seconds in the 40-yard-dash, picked the Nittany Lions over his other finalist, Virginia Tech. He also had offers from Arizona, West Virginia, Oregon, Wisconsin, and a number of other big-time programs.

Johnson took his official visit to Penn State last weekend.

“I took a visit there, talked to the coaches, hung out with some of the players and took a look around campus, checked out the facilities,” Johnson told The Detroit News. “Everything is first-rate.”

Johnson is rated the No. 3 cornerback in the Midwest and No. 36 at his position nationally by Scout.com.

Johnson earned a spot on The Detroit News Dream Team after rushing for 1,100 yards and 16 TDs, including a 60-yard TD in the state championship game. Cass Tech defeated Detroit Catholic Central 49-20 for the Division 1 title. He also had 12 pass breakups and three interceptions, and scored on three kickoff returns.
