Tuesday's prep roundup: Seaholm downs Brother Rice

Birmingham — In a battle of city rivals, Birmingham Seaholm staged a fourth-quarter comeback and Zach Brazil drained a buzzer-beater in overtime Tuesday for a 51-49 win over Birmingham Brother Rice.
Seaholm (2-1) put the ball in the hands of its leading scorer, Brady Flynn, with 31 seconds remaining. After dribbling the clock down to three seconds, Flynn took a shot that went off the rim and fell into the hands of Brazil, who put the ball back in the net as time expired, prompting the Seaholm student section to storm the court.
“I saw him go up for the shot and I knew I could grab the rebound because I had a mismatch,” Brazil said. “I put it up and it went in.”
In overtime, the teams traded buckets and went to the final minute tied, 47-47. Cooper Mixon hit a pair of free throws for Seaholm with 46 seconds remaining and Brother Rice’s Matt Torey answered with a driving layup to again tie the game before the final possession.
The winning shot wasn’t Brazil’s first big bucket of the night. The senior center grabbed a rebound off a missed shot and put the ball back in the net with 38 seconds remaining in regulation to cap a 12-1 Seaholm run across the final five minutes. That gave Seaholm a 44-43 lead.
“We just never quit,” said Flynn, who had 18 points and 11 rebounds. “We were down big and we never stopped believing in each other.”
With seven seconds remaining in regulation, Brother Rice’s Michael Laurencelle stepped to the line for two free throws, but he was only able to go 1-for-2. The scramble for the missed second free throw ran the final seconds off the clock and sent the teams to overtime.
Brazil scored 13 and Mixon finished with 11 for Seaholm.
Brother Rice’s closeout defense held Seaholm to 0-for-8 shooting from the perimeter.
“Three counts more than two,” Seaholm coach Mike DeGeeter said. “Guard play is huge, but our big guys just dominated tonight.”
Brother Rice (2-1) got eight first half points from freshman guard Jon Brantley and led 22-15 at halftime.
Jack Moran led Brother Rice with 10 points.
