Tuesday's roundup: Dakota's Jackson injured in loss to U-D Jesuit

Detroit — Macomb Dakota lost leading scorer Jermaine Jackson Jr. with 2:41 left in Tuesday’s 69-61 loss to U-D Jesuit in the final game of the Calihan Classic at Calihan Hall on Detroit Mercy’s campus.

Jackson, a senior point guard, had 24 points before being taken off in a wheelchair with a suspected right shoulder injury, which was believed to be dislocated.

Dakota was down 58-55 at the time and already without junior forward Thomas Kithier, who has missed the last two games with a right knee injury.

“Any time you see your best player go down, it’s going to be emotional for everybody,” Dakota coach Paul Tocco said. “But they didn’t quit and they played hard. It was tough. It’s tough to lose your best player.”

Senior forward Jack Ballantyne added 20 points for Dakota (3-2).

Senior forward Greg Eboigbodin led U-D (3-1) with 19 points. Senior guard Scott Nelson added 15 and senior forward Ike Eke scored 14.

Dakota led 5-0 in the first three minutes, and its defense was stout in that period. U-D didn’t get its first bucket until the four-minute mark of the first quarter, a reverse layup from Eboigbodin.

U-D coach Pat Donnelly said he was less than pleased with his team’s effort to start Tuesday’s game, after losing in overtime, 59-57 on Saturday to Flint Beecher — the first loss for U-D since March 27, 2015, when it lost 55-46 to Detroit Western in the Class A semifinals at the Breslin Center.

“I didn’t think it was great, to be honest with you,” U-D coach Pat Donnelly said. “I thought we would come out with a little more energy knowing that was something we were looking for coming out of Saturday’s loss.”

Dakota had a 13-10 lead after one quarter

Nelson carried U-D in the much more frantic second quarter, scoring seven points and taking a 30-24 lead into the break.

Both teams traded baskets in the third quarter. Ballantyne’s step-up 3-pointer gave Dakota a 41-38 lead with 1:48 left.

After 24 minutes, Dakota had a 45-40 lead.

There was a big momentum shift early in the fourth quarter. U-D went on an 8-0 run, taking a 53-48 lead with 4:45 left and erasing a seven-point deficit in the process.

Even with Jackson in the game, Ballantyne ran the offense for Dakota for much of the game.

Tocco said he trusts his 6-foot-9 senior forward to run the offense.

“He’s a point guard in a 6-9 body,” Tocco said. “I really trust him a lot. He’s going to make mistakes, but he’s learning from them. It was a big-time game tonight and he did a good job.”

Tocco said he expects Kithier to return after Christmas, while Jackson’s status is unclear.

U-D is off until next Thursday, when it plays Akron (Ohio) St. Vincent-St. Mary in the Catholic Schools Showcase at Grand Rapids Catholic Central.
