Warren — In a Catholic League Central division showdown, Warren Regina used a big second half to pick up its first win of the season, holding off a cold-shooting Dearborn Divine Child, 47-41.

“Our season starts now,” Regina senior center Megan O’Brien said after her team finally got the first-win monkey off its back. “We worked all week long for this.”

After finding itself down 17-13 at the half, Regina (1-5, 1-3) found a rhythm on both sides of the ball out of the break. It outscored Divine Child 14-4 in the third quarter to take a 27-21 lead into the final frame.

Elena Welker’s three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter cut the Regina lead to 31-30, but they weren’t enough to put Divine Child over the top, as Jessie Munson and Betsey Lueck (13 points) hit big shots down the stretch to power Regina.

“I wanted to win,” Lueck said. “I was angry about not having won yet and I played that way tonight.”

O’Brien, who was giving up quite a bit of size on the inside to Divine Child, finished with 11 points and nine rebounds before fouling out with just over two minutes remaining in the game.

"Everbody we play is bigger than Megan," Regina coach Diane Laffey said. "But she really works her tail off."

Divine Child (5-3, 2-2) missed its first nine attempts from 3-point range in the first half. Senior guard Courtney Smithon, who had missed her first five tries from beyond the arc, ended the drought when banked one in off the glass midway through the second quarter. Smithon finished 3-for-14 from long distance.

Allie Filiatraut had 12 points, five rebounds and six blocks foir Divine Child.
