Thursday’s roundup: CMA holds on to beat Denby
Vantane Garrett went 5-for-5 on free throws in the last two minutes to propel Detroit CMA past Detroit Denby, 42-35, in a girls basketball game on Thursday.
“Vantane’s free throws gave us confidence,” CMA (7-4, 4-3 PSL West) coach Stefan Waits said. “It allowed us to get into our press and slow them down at the end.”
Two of Garrett’s free throws were on the critical front ends of 1-and-1s, severely stunting the comeback attempt by Denby (8-2, 6-0 PSL East).
Garret added five rebounds and four assists.
Brianna Smith and Ishameer Smelley chipped in with eight points for CMA.
Waits was especially impressed by how well Garrett took care of the ball.
“She found the open teammate to break the press easily. The first time we played them we had trouble breaking the press and probably had 15 to 20 turnovers. Today we only had seven.”
The win avenged CMA’s nine-point loss to Denby earlier this season.
CMA beat Detroit Central Collegiate on Wednesday, but Waits felt his team made a lot of mistakes.
“A couple of temper tantrums from me got us in the right spots for our press today, and we played much better,” he said. “We still have a ways to go, but in a couple weeks I think we’ll have everything down.”
Caprice Brown led Denby with 11 points.
CMA plays Detroit Cody at home and Denby hosts Detroit International on Monday.
