Detroit Mumford clinched the PSL West Division I girls basketball crown Thursday with a 58-52 victory over Detroit Renaissance.

With Renaissance (10-3, 5-2) making a late run, sophomore point guard Adoria Williams hit a pull-up jumper to put Mumford (9-5, 7-0) up four, a lead it would never relinquish.

Leading Mumford offensively was Shardaye Yharbrough with 15 points, including 4-of-5 on free throws in the last two minutes.

Chasidey Willis scored 14 with 14 rebounds, Donnetta Colber had 10 points and 12 assists and Zamaria Polk scored nine points with 17 rebounds and five blocks for Mumford.

Mumford coach Kareem Hogan also lauded the efforts of sophomore guard Brooklyn Taylor.

“She played great defense in the second half when we really needed it,” Hogan said. “It was crucial.”

Hogan stressed that the game was close throughout.

“The game was going back and forth,” he said. “There had to be at least ten lead changes in the first half alone.”

Mumford switched to a zone defense in the second half to bleed the clock. It also put its best defender, senior guard Taylor King, on Renaissance’s best offensive player, Victoria Wright, in the fourth quarter.

“Wright had 16 points,” Hogan said. “But King was chasing her around the entire fourth quarter.”

Hogan gave credit to Renaissance for a challenging game.

“Renaissance is well-coached and they play very hard,” he said. “The game was very competitive.”

Mumford plays at Detroit Western International and Renaissance hosts Detroit Osborn on Monday.
