Wednesday’s roundup: Mercy girls reach league final
A trio of senior captains led the way for Farmington Hills Mercy in a Wednesday night girls basketball victory over Macomb Lutheran North, 54-28.
The victory sends Mercy to the Catholic League A-B Tournament championship. Mercy has won 12 consecutive games.
“I thought we played a complete game tonight,” Mercy coach Gary Morris said. “We played four good quarters at both ends of the floor.”
Morris praised senior captains Chloe Godbold, Jackie Bauer and Katie Coe following the semifinal win.
“Chloe (Godbold) and Jackie (Bauer) both shot the ball well tonight but I thought it was Katie’s best game in a while,” Morris said.
Godbold led the way with 14 points and Bauer scored 13 for Mercy (16-2). Coe finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Hannah Milligan and Ashleigh Thomas each scored nine for Lutheran North (11-7).
With the win, Mercy will face Bloomfield Hills Marian on Sunday afternoon in the championship at Wayne State.
Mercy has beaten Marian in both meetings this season.
“We know what to expect from Marian,” Morris said. “We know it’s going to be a tough game. It’s going to be a tough matchup for us.”
Allen Park Cabrini 51, Macomb Austin Catholic 12: Matt Bzura had 12 points and Colin O’Leary scored 11 for Cabrini (4-12). Benjie Brown scored eight for Austin Catholic (0-15).
Detroit Old Redford 59, Warren Michigan Collegiate 58: Rocket Watts scored 28, Bobby Walton 14 and Jawan Snoddy 12 for Old Redford (10-7). Antonio Simely finished wiuth 18 points and Reggie Lawrence 16 for Michigan Collegiate.
Detroit University Prep 48, Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy 38: Derrick Bryant Jr. had 12 points and seven assists and Shawn Pittman Jr. added 10 points and seven rebounds for University Prep (14-3). Jamal Moore scored 10 for Chandler Park (10-6).
Detroit Voyageur 62, Taylor Preparatory 25: Elijah Belle scored 30 and Carlos Johnson 10 for Voyageur (9-6). Billy Dudley had 12 points for Taylor Prep (3-13).
Harper Woods 57, Riverview Gabriel Richard 44: Tyson Quacker had 16 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists and Jovon Horton scored 13 for Harper Woods (15-1). Anthony Brown scored 12 for Gabriel Richard (13-2).
