Canton — Julia Lalain and Novi dominated the second half to defeat Plymouth, 51-29, Monday night to open up the Class A girls basketball state tournament at Salem High School.

Lalain, a junior forward, connected on a pair of mid-range jumpers to spark a 10-0 run to start the third quarter. That opened up a 31-18 cushion and Novi (15-6) led the rest of the way to advance to Wednesday’s 7:30 p.m. district semifinal against rival Northville (17-2).

Northville, which advanced to the quarterfinals last year, won both regular-season games against Novi, including 50-41 the last time the teams played on Feb. 10. Canton and Salem play in the 6 p.m. semifinal.

“We just got really fired up at halftime, knew we didn’t have a great first half and really had to get after it,” Lalain said. “We have a flex offense and it really worked, got us going for the second half. I think we had a really amazing second half playing together.”

Junior point guard Ellie Mackay scored 18, senior guard Cara Ninkovich 14 and Lalain 12 for Novi.

Mackay scored off a putback for a 29-18 lead, then scored off a driving layup to open up a 34-21 lead with a minute left in the third and took a charge seconds later.

“Our plan was to wear them down, that’s why we picked up full-court in the first half and I think that kind of happened there and we had that nice little run to start the third quarter, running the flex cut, got some open looks and hit some open shots,” Novi coach Bill Kelp said.

LeDoux finished with 13 for Plyumouth (9-12).
