Grosse Pointe South junior catcher/center fielder Davis Graham’s 4-for-4 afternoon helped South to a 7-5 win on the road against Birmingham Brother Rice.
Two of Graham’s four hits were doubles, leading the way for South (4-3), which had nine players with hits — seven with RBI.
“He’s just been pounding the ball,” South coach Dan Griesbaum said of Graham, who was hitting .500 going into Tuesday’s game. “He had a very good summer and came around this year. He really came into his own. He hits the ball hard all the time.”
South jumped out to a 6-0 lead going to the bottom of the fourth, before Brother Rice got on the board on a 3-run home run from Christian Faust off of South senior starter David Toth. Then in the bottom of the sixth, Tito Flores’ 2-run home run off of junior Cam Shook cut South’s lead to 6-5.
“We enjoy playing Brother Rice,” Griesbaum said. “They’re a very good team. When you play good teams, they bring out the best in you. We played our best game of the year, no doubt.”
Toth (2-0) picked up the win for South. He went 3 2/3 innings, allowing three runs and striking out five. Shook threw the final 3 1/3 innings of two-run ball for his first save of the season.
“He throws hard,” Griesbaum said of Toth. “He gets 86-90 (miles per hour). He hit 90 once today. We wanted to keep him under the 75-pitch count because we’re playing (Grosse Pointe) North on Friday at Comerica Park. He had good stuff today. He was throwing very hard. The wind was blowing out, so he was throwing hard for the wind being in his face.”
