Madison Heights Lamphere got a couple of clutch performances Monday night as it grinded out a 5-4 win over Warren Woods Tower in a Macomb Area Conference crossover softball game.

Julia Roell brought in the winning run with a single that capped a three-run sixth inning for Lamphere (3-0), and little-used relief pitcher Rachael Schorrn was able to shut the door on Tower in the final two frames.

Lamphere starting pitcher Leanna Radick, typically untouchable, started to struggle with her control in the fourth and fifth innings. She gave up four runs as Tower overcame a 2-0 deficit.

Radick’s struggles prompted coach Don Mullen to make the switch to an untested Schorrn.

“(Radick) is usually our horse,” Mullen said. “She had some pretty good stuff early on, but then she started to put people on base.”

Schorrn, a junior who was called up late last year and hasn’t gotten many reps at the varsity level, showed the composure of a veteran pitcher in a tough situation. After her team had fought back to take a 5-4 lead, Schorrn gave up a one-out triple to Tower’s Laura Wilson in the seventh. With the tying run in scoring position, Schorrn struck out the next two hitters to preserve the win.

“That was definitely a confidence builder for her,” Mullen said. “This was a big game for us, and she came through.”

Junior catcher Alexis Wark had a big day at the plate for Lamphere, going 3-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored. Roell went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Wilson finished with two hits, an RBI and a run scored, while Ally Smith had a double, triple, RBI and a run scored for Tower (4-1).
