In a battle of two top Detroit Public School League baseball teams, Detroit Western beat Detriot King, 5-3, on Friday.

(7-4, 2-0 PSL Mega Divison)

On Monday, senior pitcher Miguel Ambriz threw a no-hitter against Detroit Catholic Central. On Friday, it was all about Western’s young guys. With the score tied in the bottom of the sixth inning, junior center fielder Will English stepped up and delivered a two-run single.

“We’re not playing bad, we’re on a winning streak right now,” said Western coach Juan Sanchez, whose team improved to 7-4, 2-0.

The injury bug has bit Western this season, but Sanchez said the team is getting better each day.

“We have already loss two kids for the season due to injury,” Sanchez said. “We have to stay healthy.”

Sophomore pitcher Brendan Ray picked up the win in relief and also had a two-run home run in the fifth inning to tie the game.

“Our young guys have stepped up in the past few games,” Sanchez said. “I’m looking forward to see how well they progress over the season.”

Senior Jonathan Darby led King’s offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
