Birmingham Groves lost to Walled Lake Northern 10-9 in eight innings but rebounded in its second game Saturday by defeating Lakeland 14-2 in five innings.
In the first game, Groves (11-2) had an 8-1 lead after five innings before Northern rallied. For Northern, Zach Brunet went 4-for-5 with two doubles, three RBI and two runs. Corbin Gibson went 3-for-4 with two RBI. For Groves, Zavier Warren was 2-for-2 with two runs.
In the second game, George Cutler and Chaise Ford both went 2-for-2 with a triple, and Warren (double) and Andrew Martin went 2-for-3. Tyler Newitt was the winning pitcher with three innings of one-hit ball and Matt Bachand pitched two innings, also allowing just one hit.
Grosse Pointe South 5-6, Grandville 4-9: In the first game, David Toth hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth for South’s winning margin. Michael Lanzon went 2-for-3 and Jack Doeber was the winner in relief with 2.1 innings of shutout pitching. In the second game, which went nine innings, South’s Rob Martinez went 4-for-5, Brad Thompson and Lanzon both had two RBI, and Joe Naporano went 2-for-4 with a solo home run.
Grosse Pointe Liggett 6-7, Dryden 0-0: In the first game, Anthony George (4-0) pitched a complete-game one-hitter with five strikeouts and Noah Miller went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. In the second game, Alec Azar (4-0) also pitched a complete-game one-hitter, with 13 strikeouts, and Tyler Daar went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and four RBI.
