Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett star pitcher Jackson Walkowiak gave up a first-inning run but no more to cruise to a 6-1 victory over Lutheran Westland on Wednesday.

Walkowiak, a senior, pitched five innings in the win, allowing only four hits and striking out four.

“After giving up the run, he (Walkowiak) settled down and pitched great the rest of the day,” Liggett coach Dan Cimini said. “He threw strikes and had his curveball working, and we played really good defense behind him.”

Pitching and defense have been the calling card for Liggett (15-0). Of its 15 wins, 10 have come via shutout.

According to Cimini, the pressure of an udefeated season isn’t getting to the kids.

“They’re just taking it game by game. The kids are very confident and just going about their business,” Cimini said.

Sophomore Billy Kopicki went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs, and junior Tyler Daar pitched the last two innings without surrendering a run.

Liggett will look to remain undefeated when it faces Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
