Birmingham Groves' bats sent the message but the team's pitching sealed the deal in winning the Nathan Manuel Memorial Tournament Saturday in Clarkston.

Groves hammered hosts Clarkston 11-1 in a five-inning first game behind a thundering performance at the plate by John Kowalchuk and Zavier Warren, who each went 3-for-3. Kowalchuk slammed a triple and Warren had a double. Ryan Laub picked up the win, giving up two hits while walking two and striking out two.

In Game 2, Groves defeated Clarkston 4-1 behind the two-hit pitching of Rolando Arambula, whose lone run was unearned. He struck out two and walked two in seven innings. Kowalchuk went 2-for-3 with a double and Michael Pastoria added a hit and a walk.

Clarkston's Joe Halligan and Zach Scott both doubled.

Max Whalen provided six solid innings in Groves' tournament-clinching 3-1 victory over Flint Carman-Ainsworth. Whalen walked one and struck out one before giving way to Tyler Newitt, who registered two strikeouts in seventh while earning the save.

Brock Anderson and Nate Higley each had a hit for Groves (19-2, 7-1 Oakland Activities Association White).
