Grosse Pointe South exploded for nine runs in the first inning en route to a 13-3 baseball victory over Sterling Heights Stevenson on Wednesday afternoon in Sterling Heights.

Leading the way offensively for South (11-13, 5-6 MAC Red) was senior right fielder Michael Lanzon, who went 4-for-5 at the plate.

“He (Lanzon) didn’t swing at any bad pitches,” South coach Dan Griesbaum said. “When he hits the ball, he hits it hard, and it fell in for him today.”

Senior first baseman Jacob Brauer broke the game open for South when he tattooed a 1-1 pitch far over the left field fence, putting South up 4-0 in the first inning.

Junior right-hander Cam Shook got the win, scattering six hits, walking two and striking out two.

Junior catcher Joe Naporano, junior left fielder Giovanni Lutfy and junior designated hitter Nate Budziak each had two hits for South.

South capitalized on eight fielding errors by Stevenson (18-4, 10-1 MAC Red) to deliver Stevenson’s first loss in the Macomb Athletic Conference.

“We’re very pleased with the victory,” Griesbaum said. “We’ve lost a lot of one-run leads this season, so it was nice to jump out to a big lead.

Mario Camelletti provided all of Stevenson’s offense with a three-run home run in the third inning.

Griesbaum says pitching is the key to Thursday’s rematch:

“We need to get another good pitching performance because Stevenson is a great team offensively.”

The teams meet tomorrow at Grosse Pointe South at 4:30.
