Wednesday’s roundup: G.P. South shuts down Eisenhower

Senior pitcher Rob Martinez pitched a complete game while allowing only one earned run to propel Grosse Pointe South to a 4-3 victory at Utica Eisenhower on Wednesday afternoon.

Martinez battled through all seven innings by inducing several pop-ups and grounders. He only struck out one batter and walked four, but South coach Dan Griesbaum was pleased with his effort.

“Overall we played very well, especially the pitching. Rob kept them off balance all day,” Griesbaum said.

The score was tied, 3-3, in the top of the fifth when junior second baseman Jacob Hinkle lined a single to right field, scoring the winning run for South. Hinkle had two hits on the day.

Senior left fielder Jack Froelich hit 1-for-3 for South (15-15, 6-8 MAC Red).

A swirling wind provided a challenge for defenders on both teams.

“A few pop-ups and fly balls were adventures for fielders trying to fight the wind,” Griesbaum said.

The win avenged South’s 5-4 loss to Eisenhower (20-6, 10-4) in extra innings on Monday.

“We’ve lost so many one-run games this year, so it’s nice to finally win one,” Griesbaum said.

Pre-districts start on May 30, and Griesbaum has identified one crucial factor in his team going far.

“We need to get healthy, and I think we will be by the time playoffs start. We’ve had so many games where we’ve had multiple starters out.”
