Saturday's prep roundup: Howell sweeps pair from Brother Rice

The Detroit News

Howell received a pair of pitching gems from Evan Maize and Sam Weatherly in sweeping a baseball doubleheader from Birmingham Brother Rice, 8-0 and 4-2, Saturday.

In the first game, Maize yielded four hits with one walk and one strikeout in a complete game shutout while senior outfielder Caleb Ballgaard collected three hits for Howell.

Weatherly, a left-hander, held Brother Rice to five hits while striking out eight in the nightcap. Ballgaard, again, supplied the offensive fireworks, slamming a two-run homer for Howell (23-8).

"We had great pitching and timely hitting against an excellent club," co-coach Mike Weatherly said.

Howell plays Dakota (3:45 p.m.) and Bay City Western in Flint on Friday.
