Detroit Catholic Central used a 14-point turnaround in the second half to pull out a 78-65 win over Detroit Loyola Wednesday.
Junior Davis Lukomski finished with a team-high 27 points and fellow junior Justin Rukat had 19 for Catholic Central (6-0), which was down 34-29 at halftime. Myron Gardner had 25 points for Loyola (3-3).
“We were down eight in the first quarter and five at the half, but they did not stop competing out there,” Catholic Central coach Bill Dyer said.
Dyer said that the slow start was from a long break from basketball.
“We haven’t played all Christmas break,” he said. “So we came out a little rusty to start the game.”
One key factor in Catholic Central's win was keeping Gardner out of the game. Despite scoring 25, the guard was plagued by foul trouble, which Catholic Central used to its advantage.
“Once Gardner got in foul trouble the momentum shifted and we were able to take advantage of him (Gardner) being out of the game,” Dyer said.
Dyer plays a lot of juniors for Catholic Central. One junior that he says he is pleased with is Lukomski.
“He (Lukomski) was the third leading scorer on the team last year and this year his game is better all around,” Dyer said. “He has really been a blessing for us this year.”
Catholic Central remains undefeated on the season with the win, but its schedule will only get tougher. Catholic Central’s next game will be against Orchard Lake St. Mary’s on Tuesday.
