Senior point guard Daniel Everhart’s 23-point performance for Marine City Cardinal Mooney in a 70-44 win over Allen Park Cabrini on Monday made him Cardinal Mooney’s all-time leading scorer with 1,434 career points.

“His game has improved every year,” Cardinal Mooney coach Mike McAndrews said. “He’s got the ability to score mid-range and at the basket.”

McAndrews is in his 20th year of coaching boys varsity basketball at Cardinal Mooney (7-1, 5-0) and said Everhart is the hardest-working player he’s coached.

“Did I see this coming in the beginning? Probably not. But after all the work he put in, I did think he had a shot. And he’s not just a scorer. He’s truly the best all-around player I have,” McAndrews said.

Everhart passed Tom Pallisco, who played at Cardinal Mooney from 2002-06, on a pull-up jumper in the lane. McAndrews took a timeout and Everhart was greeted with a standing ovation from the Cardinal Mooney crowd.

“It was memorable in that it was the exact type of play that he wasn’t capable of when he was a freshman. It’s something he’s worked extremely hard on,” McAndrews said.

Everhart is a four-year varsity starter, but as a freshman he mainly relied on spot-up shooting for offense. His ball skills, decision making and passing have improved immensely, and he’s now a much more aggressive, but still efficient, scorer.

“It sure makes your life easy,” McAndrews said about coaching the most prolific scorer in Cardinal Mooney’s 37-year history of boys basketball. “It makes me a better coach when you’ve got a kid that can score the ball and create on his own like that.”

Jack Galaska chipped in with 11 points for Cardinal Mooney.

Cabrini is 2-5, 1-4.
