Clarkston — For all the talk about Clarkston basketball off the court, it continues to handle business on the court.

Senior forward Thomas Kithier, who is tied up in a battle in actual court with the MHSAA, remains ineligible for the defending Division 1 state champions. He was at the game putting hands in his teammate’s faces during warm-ups before taking in the rest of his team’s dismantling of North Farmington from the bench.

It wasn't always pretty, but led by a suffocating defense and 16 points from senior guard CJ Robinson, Clarkston routed North Farmington, 42-15, in Oakland Activities Association Red Division play Friday night.

Clarkston (11-1, 4-0) held North Farmington scoreless in the first quarter and went on to score the first 26 points of the game before senior forward Donny Dreshaj finally got his team on the board midway through the second quarter.

North Farmington (3-4, 0-4) didn’t have an answer for the double teams that Clarkston was throwing its way, as well as the constant pressure on the ball as soon as it crossed midcourt.

“We wanted to jump on them early,” Robinson said. “We were able to do that and be successful. We’re clicking at a good pace right now.”

Clarkston was sharp from beyond the arc early on, as its first six field goals came from long range. Robinson accounted for three of those, while MSU-bound point guard Foster Loyer hit a pair from deep.

“We put a great emphasis on passing the ball and moving it today,” Robinson said. “(Loyer) was phenomenal at hitting me in a good spot to score, and I was able to knock them down early and get us going.”

Loyer finished with 14 points and four assists.

“They’re as good of two guards as there are in the state,” Clarkston coach Dan Fife said of his Robinson and Loyer. “They move the ball well and play well together, and it’s tough to guard.”

With a 30-2 lead at halftime, Clarkston’s offense seemed to take its foot off the gas in the second half. North Farmington outscored Clarkston, which benched all of its regulars in the fourth quarter, 13-12 after the break.

Despite a stellar performance by the regulars in only holding North Farmington to seven points through three quarters, Fife insisted his team still has work to do on the defensive side of the ball.

“I’ve been getting on them about their effort, but they did heck of a job today,” Fife said. "I’m still concerned and want our defense to get better, but that’s the kind of effort (we've) got to have all of the time.”
