Detroit Osborn used a 40-9 rebounding advantage to down Detroit Denby, 59-31, in girls basketball on Monday afternoon.

Leading the way for Osborn (5-6, 2-4 PSL East Division 1) was senior center Maria Martin with 23 points and 18 rebounds.

“She controlled the middle,” Osborn coach Kyohn Burton said. “Her drop step and hook shot were working for her, and she didn’t miss a layup.

"She’s my only senior, and she’s been inspirational. Some girls would have given up or quit this year, but she’s taken the losses in stride, and she’s extremely responsible and a good student.”

Junior forward Erin Davis had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Osborn. She was particularly hot from the corner, and many of her shots were assisted by freshman Keyanna Dailey, who had nine assists and five points.

Osborn only had a two-point lead at half but took advantage of its rebounding edge to get more fast-break points in the second half.

“We got into a running match because we were so much bigger than them,” Burton said.

Denby coach Marnina Sullivan, who played at Detroit King and then Dayton, was an assistant under Burton when he coached at Denby from 2010-2012.

“I was impressed with her," Burton said of Sullivan. "She made some good adjustments in the second quarter to keep it close."

Both teams play their next games on Wednesday. Osborn hosts Detroit Mumford (8-3, 5-1 PSL West Division 1) while Denby welcomes Detroit Cass Tech.
