Tuesday's prep roundup: Clarkston humbles Hazel Park

Hazel Park — The OAA Red showdown didn’t live up to its hype Tuesday night as defending Class A state champion Clarkston ran previously unbeaten Hazel Park out of its own gym — and a standing room only crowd at that — 70-39.
Clarkston (12-1, 6-0) jumped out to a 9-2 lead to set the tempo, then used a 20-0 run to take a commanding 31-6 lead midway through the second quarter after Hazel Park (11-1, 5-1) had cut the deficit to five (11-6).
Wisconsin-bound Taylor Currie, a 6-foot-9 senior, came out with tremendous energy, contributing six points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocks in the opening quarter to help Clarkston take an 18-6 lead.
Michigan State-bound point guard Foster Loyer, a front-runner for Mr. Basketball, was the catalyst during the pivotal 20-0 run, scoring 11, including a pair of 3-pointers and a three-point play (basket and free throw).
Loyer finished with 34 points, making 9-of-13 shots (3-of-5 3-pointers) and 13-of-15 free throws. Currie finished with 18 points, 18 rebounds and five blocks and senior guard C.J. Robinson, 13 points.
“I was really excited for this game, our team was as well,” said Currie. “We knew that Hazel Park’s a great team and they’ve been climbing the last couple of years and we were really ready to play.
“We watched film together as a team last night. We came out and I thought we were real locked in. My teammates did a great job of finding me in the post and I did a good job of getting deep post position and it just felt good and it was going in.”
Currie had a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) by halftime and Clarkston led 37-16, shooting 66 percent from the field while limiting Hazel Park to 25 percent shooting and keeping its backcourt of Carl Bow and David Hearns scoreless.
Bow and Hearns each finished with two points. Khari Adams, a 6-5 senior, scored 14 for Hazel Park.
Clarkston increased its lead to 51-26 after three.
“Of course, this was a big game, it was 1 vs. 2 playing, but at the end of the day you have to play, you have to overcome the lights (big stage) and we have to make better plays and better decisions out there and just compete overall better,” said Hazel Park coach Brandon Barrett of his team which moved up from Class B and the OAA White to Class A and the Red division this season.
“He (Currie) did a good job in the paint, a 6-9 kid is what you dream of and we didn’t have anything to compete with that. Our tallest guy is 6-5 (Adams) and even though he’s athletic, I mean 6-9 turning around and with the hook shot that’s going to be hard to stop all night.”
Clarkston coach Dan Fife was impressed with his team’s defense, especially during that 20-0 run.
“To be honest with you I didn’t know it was a 20-0 run, I was just watching us play, but 20-0 runs, that’s always good; it means we’re defending well and coming down and running good offense,” Fife said.
