Detroit Delta Prep survived a 16-point comeback by Detroit Central to advance in the PSL boys basketball tournament on Monday.

Delta Prep won, 96-91, in overtime after holding a 16-point lead in the second quarter.

“We got into early foul trouble in the third quarter,” Delta Prep coach Darrel Whaley said. “Then all their (Central) players were hitting 3s. That’s what led to the comeback.”

With only seconds left in the fourth quarter and Delta Prep down by two, Delta Prep senior guard Tarique Jones drove into the lane and missed a difficult layup attempt. Delta Prep’s other senior guard, Rozelle Robinson, snagged the offensive rebound and converted the putback with 2 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

Robinson was Delta Prep’s best player on the night, with 33 points and four steals.

“He (Robinson) was penetrating really well,” Whaley said. “He played good defense, too, and it led to a lot of layups for him,”

Jones had 26 points and five rebounds and was 5-for-8 on 3-point attempts.

“He’s (Jones) more of a shooter,” Whaley said. “In the first half he was running the point around Ro (Robinson). In the second half, Ro took over the point and it allowed Jones to spot up more.”

Keron Carter chipped in with 16 points and seven rebounds, and Damien Robinson added 10 for Delta Prep.

The play-in game victory moves Delta Prep on to play Detroit Henry Ford (12-3, 7-1 PSL West 1) on the road Tuesday in Round 1 of the PSL tournament, and Whaley knows his team will need to do several things better in order to go further:

“We have to stop making silly turnovers and control the ball and the clock. Turnovers are how you lose a lead.”
