The best players don’t often come off the bench.

But due to senior night, Detroit Community boys basketball coach Scott Newman wanted to start five seniors, leaving talented junior guard Rayvon Williamson on the sidelines.

Williamson didn’t miss a beat, leading Community with 19 points and eight assists in a 91-56 victory over Melvindale ABT in a Michigan Metro Athletic Conference Black Division game.

“He was distributing really well,” Newman said. “He’s been the catalyst for us all season.”

Williamson, who averages 23 points a game and also plays football, made the most of 11 Community (11-4, 8-2 MMAC Black) steals by pushing the ball in transition and finding open shooters. His football skills came in handy when scraping off physical screeners to drive or execute a quality pass.

On a fast break, Williamson lobbed it up to junior forward Herman Brown, who used all of his 6-foot-5 frame to catch the ball with two hands and slam it down in the game’s most memorable play.

Brown finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds for Community (11-4, 8-2), while senior forward Alawnta Todd had 16 points, junior forward Terrell Tillman 12, and senior guard Jordan Thomas chipped in 11.

The game was a makeup from a Friday contest that was canceled due to snow and marks the end of the Michigan Metro regular season with the conference tournament starting next week.

“I was happy to get the chance to start five seniors, but there are things we need to do better in terms of offensive execution to win playoff games,” Newman said. “Today was just a tune-up.”
