After losing to Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy for its only league loss during the regular season back in January, Detroit Old Redford head coach Craig Covington couldn’t wait for a rematch.

Old Redford got just that in the Charter League championship Friday night, avenging the earlier loss to Chandler Park Academy with a 63-50 victory.

The win settled a tie in the standings between Chandler Park Academy and Old Redford (13-4) and gave the latter its first Charter League championship in program history.

“This win was big for the school,” Covington said. “It gives us a lot of momentum (heading into the playoffs). I really just wanted to get back at them.”

Andre Pope and Isaiah Jackson protected the paint, which Covington singled out as the difference. They combined for 21 rebounds and 15 blocks.

“I really liked the all-out effort,” Covington said. “We were diving for balls and we were doing the little things.”

Although Pope and Jackson provided a lift in the post, Rocket Watts’ 20 second-half points, and 27 total, led the charge.

Andre Bradford led the way for Chandler Park Academy with 21 points.

Heading into the final three regular-season games before the playoffs, Covington likes how his team is shaping up.

“When we’re playing together with energy, we seem to thrive,” Covington said.

Old Redford will get a break before playing Feb. 27 against Dearborn Advanced Tech.
