Detroit Edison’s debut in the Public School League’s Mega Division on Tuesday afternoon was a memorable one, as the 2017 East-West Division champion scored an 8-7 win over last year’s Mega runner-up, Detroit King.
With the bases loaded in the seventh inning, Edison (3-1, 1-0) turned to sophomore Seku Slade, who struck out the first batter he faced. When the next King hitter failed to lay down a bunt on a suicide squeeze attempt, Edison was able to get the second out at third base. That’s when Slade reached back and delivered a game-ending strikeout to earn the save for Edison in its debut in the PSL’s top division.
“This will give us some confidence in the league going forward,” Edison coach Mark Brown said. “We’re excited about the talent we have, but we’ve still got a lot of work to do.”
Slade wasn’t the only young gun to produce for Edison on Tuesday.
Freshman Warner Blakely went 2-for-3, notching what proved to be the winning RBI with a two-run single in the fifth inning. Freshman starting pitcher Dave Thurman also turned in a solid performance, going 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI and picking up the win.
“We’re a real young team, mainly freshmen and sophomores,” Brown said. “I didn’t know how we would fare with all of the young kids, but the boys stepped up real big today and got it done.”
