Orchard Lake St. Mary’s took two from Divine Child in a Catholic League baseball doubleheader to open conference play on Wednesday. St. Mary's (5-1, 2-0) took the opener 9-4 and shut out Divine Child in the second game 8-0.
St. Mary's head coach Matt Petry was pleased with his team’s victories.
“It felt good to take two in the season opener today,” he said.
St. Mary's got off to a slow start in the first game trailing by three going into the fourth inning.
“We didn’t start off the way we wanted to in game one,” Petry said.
But the bats came alive for St. Mary's with the help of freshman Alex Mooney, who was 4-for-5 with a double and five stolen bases.
St. Mary's tacked on three runs in the fourth to tie the score. Starting pitcher Anthony Marcon was able to settle down after his giving up three in the first inning. St. Mary's put six more runs on the scoreboard and held Divine Child to one run after the three-run first. Sophomore Logan Wood (Michigan commit) picked up the win on the mound pitching three innings, striking out five.
Game 2 was all St. Mary's. Junior starting pitcher and Michigan State commit Dillon Kark struck out 18 batters while allowing two hits.
“We started off slow offensively, but Dillon was able to keep Divine Child off of the scoreboard,” Petry said.
Kark’s dominating performance on the mound woke up the bats for St. Mary's late in the game.
“Dillon kept us in the ballgame, that’s what we needed in that second game to help us get the victory,” Petry said.
The score was 0-0 going into the fifth until St. Mary's exploded for six runs. With Kark in control on the mound, Divine Child did not have an answer offensively. St. Mary's added two runs in the sixth to secure the victory. Harrison Poeszat was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Kameron Arnold was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
St. Mary's has started the season on a good note, winning its last five.
“We lost our season opener but we have been able to bounce back from that loss and play good baseball as of late,” Petry said.
St. Mary's will host its next game against Rochester Adams at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
