Wednesday’s preps: Stevenson beats Utica Eisenhower in baseball
High-school teams in Michigan have not been very pleased with the weather this year, with many games canceled or postponed.
But on Wednesday, the weather held up as Sterling Heights Stevenson (3-2, 1-0 MAC Red) defeated Utica Eisenhower (3-1, 0-1), 8-1, in a MAC Red baseball game.
“The weather has not been in our favor these past few weeks but it was good to get out there today,” Stevenson coach Joe Emanuele said.
Stevenson was led by a dominant performance on the mound by senior pitcher and Central Michigan commit Garrett Navarra. He threw five innings allowing four hits and giving up one run.
“Navarra will be one of our key pitchers this year,” Emanuele said. “He went out there today and pitched very well.”
Junior Austin Owens came on in relief and pitched the final two innings for Stevenson, not allowing a run. Defensively,
While Stevenson’s defense made plays, the offense added runs on the scoreboard. Stevenson took a 2-0 lead after the second inning. The fourth inning was when the game broke open. Senior Johnny Teolis doubled, which scored three runs putting Stevenson up 5-0. Teolis went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Fellow senior Mitchell Shamblin also went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and sophomore Breenan Lux had two hits on the day.
With the win, Stevenson has won three straight after losing its first two games to start off the season.
Stevenson will play Eisenhower again at 4 p.m. Thursday.
Birmingham Groves 7, Birmingham Seaholm 5: Matt Bachand got the win while pitching five scoreless innings in relief, allowing two hits and one walk; George Cutler was 2-for-4 with a doublel and Roger Motley hit a three-run double and had a stolen base for Groves (5-0, 1-0 OAA White). Lucas Simmons was 2-for-4 with a double for Seaholm.
Farmington 6, Detroit Western 5: Jacob Vrooman was the winning pitcher throwing 1.1 innings, allowing one walk and no hits, and Deven Mahanti was 1-for-3 for Farmington (3-2). William English was 2-for-4 for Detroit Western (5-2).
Grosse Pointe South 6, Clinton Township Chippewa Valley 0: Davis Graham went 2-for-3 with a RBI, Anthony DerManulian had two RBIs, Conor McKenna had two hits and Cam Shook got the win while pitching 6.2 innings, striking out nine and allowing one hit for South (7-0, 1-0 MAC Red).
Rochester 5, Rochester Adams 0: Junior Owen Malinowski got the win while pitching 6.2 innings, allowing four hits and striking out nine; Marty O’Neill was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored; and Noah Stout was 1-for-3 with two runs scored for Rochester (4-2).
Birmingham Brother Rice 83, Detroit Catholic Central 45: Lukas Mitrius won the 110-mETER hurdles in 17.4 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 44.3 for Brother Rice (2-0).
Anchor Bay 3, Utica 0: Carlie Barone, Megan Buchan and Karina Arnold each scored a goal and Ally Gaunt posted her third consecutive shutout for Anchor Bay (4-0). Utica is 3-2.
