Friday’s preps: Detroit Western earns win in baseball
Perennial PSL champion Detroit Western bounced back from a loss against Farmington to beat Livonia Stevenson, 4-2, in baseball Friday afternoon in Livonia.
Junior pitcher Christian Gutierrez got the win in relief for Western (7-2, 2-0 PSL Mega), striking out four. He also hit the go-ahead, two-RBI double in the top of the sixth, a 2-0 pitch that he smacked off the left field fence, a foot away from a home run.
Junior first baseman Emmanuel Clark went 2-for-3 with an RBI and led Western’s three-run sixth inning off with a walk.
“Clark had clutch hits with two strikes,” Western coach Juan Sanchez said. “Situational hitting was big for him.”
Senior Malik Abdul pitched 4.1 innings, striking out four and only allowing two hits, plus he hit a double in the sixth inning.
“It was a blessing to be outside and not have hand warmers in our pockets,” Sanchez said, expressing frustration at weather that has put a damper on the high school baseball season so far.
Western has won 10-straight PSL championships, but Sanchez says his team needs more time outdoors to make it 11.
“We’re just trying to get outside consistently,” Sanchez said. “We’ve had more practices inside than outside. Everybody is pitching well because of the cold weather, so I’m just hoping for some of our other bats to get going, and then I think we’ll be OK.”
Detroit Central 10, Detroit Henry Ford 6: Aireonte Washington pitched six innings and struck out eight, Dionte Rucker went 1-for-2, scored two runs and had two RBIs, and Phillip Whittington scored two runs for Central (2-1, 2-1 PSL West 2).
Detroit Edison 4, Detroit Renaissance 2: David Thurman pitched five innings in the win and had two hits and RBIs, Seku Slade pitched a six-out save, and Warner Blakely went 2-for-2 with one RBI for Edison (4-2, 2-1 PSL Mega). Renaissance is 1-4, 0-3.
Southfield A&T 11, Royal Oak 3: Dwayne Henderson pitched four innings and had six strikeouts and two walks batting; Jalen Knight went 1-for-2 and had a double, four RBIs and two walks; Brian Caldwell went 1-for-2 and had a double, two RBIs and a walk; and Soloman McCants went 3-for-4 and had three RBIs for A&T (1-3, 1-0 OAA Gold). Jacob Isaacson went 3-for-4 and had one RBI and one run for Royal Oak.
