Detroit King QB Dequan Finn commits to Central Michigan

Detroit King junior quarterback Dequan Finn celebrated his 17th birthday Saturday by committing to Central Michigan.

Finn helped King win the Division 2 state championship his sophomore year, then led King to a PSL championship and a state semifinal appearance this past fall.

Finn had 10 offers, picking the Chippewas over such schools as Arkansas State, Bowling Green and Air Force.

“He visited the school a couple of times and he just really liked the coaching staff,” King coach Tyrone Spencer said. “I think he really loved the offense. It’s an uptempo, spread offense that really fits him. He really feels like he can be a game-changer in that type of offense.

“Those coaches really wanted him. They wanted Dequan Finn, and we always tell kids to go where you’re wanted. If they feel like you’re No. 1 to them then they’re going to give you every opportunity to be successful, and Coach Bono (John Bonamego) is a great guy.”

Finn will have a lot of weapons to work with during his senior year with All-Detroit first-team receiver Lemuel Neely-Watley (53 receptions, 747 yards, 11 touchdowns) leaving Detroit East English after his sophomore season to join an offense that includes four-star receiver Rashawn Williams, who had a strong sophomore year and already has 20 offers, including Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State.

“Watley was actually with us in 7-on-7s heading into his freshman year, then moved on to East English, and then he’s come back and it’s like he had never left, just has really fit in,” Spencer said.

“He’s really fit in as far as working out and meshing with the kids, so I’m excited to see how that’s going to look with him and those guys because I know he made some plays on us his freshman year with East English. He’s also a factor on defense.”

Neely-Watley intercepted seven passes while breaking up 13 from his cornerback spot.
