Wednesday's preps: S.H. Stevenson posts diamond win over G.P. South
Sterling Heights Stevenson defeated Grosse Pointe South, 8-3, in a Macomb Area Conference Red Division baseball showdown on Wednesday.
It was the second straight win for Stevenson over South, following its 12-2 triumph on Monday.
Stevenson has bounced back from a four-game losing streak earlier this season. Coach Joe Emanuele said he likes the direction his team is going in now.
“We’re still trying to put some pieces together,” Emanuele said. “The more games we play, the better we will get.”
Stevenson is 5-6 overall and 3-2 in the MAC Red.
These last two victories were big, defeating one of the state's top teams in Grosse Pointe South (10-2, 2-2 MAC Red). Stevenson had a good outing from senior starting pitcher Johnny Tikkanen. Tikkanen gave three runs, four hits, one walk and struck out six over six innings.
Stevenson got some big help from sophomore Mark Kattula at the plate. Kattula went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two doubles. Senior Mitchell Shamblin had two hits and an RBI.
Offensively Stevenson is starting to come together. In its last game against South, Stevenson used to the long ball to help secure the win as senior Johnny Teolis and junior Austin Owens each homered.
Stevenson will travel to Rochester Adams on Friday for a doubleheader.
