Detroit Country Day relied on explosive offense to down Bloomfield Hills, 15-4, in baseball on Friday at Country Day.
Freshman Saborn Campbell went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs to lead Country Day (11-1). While he usually plays center field, Campbell patrolled second base on Friday.
“Campbell is a young player that’s got great speed,” Country Day coach Steve Lepkowski said. “He’s making solid contact, and every time he hits it, he puts pressure on the defense because of that speed. He’s playing ahead of his years.”
Bloomfield Hills held a brief lead, scoring a run in the top of the first, but Country Day answered back with five runs in the bottom of the first, seizing control and never letting it go.
Senior first baseman John Malcom went 3-for-5 with a double, a three-run home run, and four RBIs for Country Day. Malcom is committed to play baseball at Vanderbilt.
“Malcom is probably the best player I’ve ever coached,” Lepkowski said. “He’s the heart and soul of our team. He’s so consistent and puts in a good day’s work every time he goes out there.
Sophomore shortstop Parker Pilar went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and played his usual, solid defense up the middle for Country Day.
Lepkowski was happy with his team’s effort, especially considering this game was the team’s third in three days.
“We played pretty clean,” Lepkowski said. “We had a lot of focus for being on the back end of a three-day stretch. We consistently had great at-bats and seemed to put pressure on every inning. Our defense made the plays it was supposed to.”
Sam Hoag went 1-for-3 with a solo home run for Bloomfield Hills.
