Auburn Hills Avondale dealt Pontiac Notre Dame Prep its first baseball loss of the season in a 2-0 defensive battle at Notre Dame on Tuesday afternoon.

Avondale (7-8, 2-2 OAA Blue) pitcher Ethan Jewell threw a complete game two-hitter with five strikeouts, retiring the last 14 batters he faced.

“It took him an inning or two to get used to the turf mound,” Avondale coach Tom Kurczewski said. “But once he had a rhythm, he was mixing his pitches really well--fastball, curveball, change-up.”

Avondale scored both its runs in the top of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Will Fahoome started things off with a walk and would eventually come around to score.

“He (Fahoome) puts the bat on the ball and works the count,” Kurczewski said. “He hits the ball solidly, and he really has been all year. He’s our catalyst.”

Both teams made impressive defensive plays, and neither team recorded an error, quite the feat for Avondale after committing nine in a loss to Birmingham Goves on Monday.
“The biggest thing we need to improve is consistency,” Kurczewski said. “We played a flawless game today, but baseball is all about doing it day in and day out.”

Avondale and Notre Dame (14-1) have always had a minor rivalry in baseball, but it’s heated up recently with the teams playing several tight games in the last couple years.
“We’ve always been pretty close,” Kurczewski said. “I can’t speak for Notre Dame, but for us it was a big game, and our guys were ready to play.”

Jack Krausmann threw a complete game, three-hitter for Notre Dame in the losing effort.
