Sometimes, it’s better to be lucky than good.

Allen Park was a little bit of both Monday in its matchup with Trenton, tying up a 2-0 game in the fifth inning on a pair of wild pitches before riding the momentum to nine runs on 10 hits in a 9-2 victory.

Going into the fifth inning down 2-0, two wild pitches and a walk loaded the bases for Cal Coaltrain, who knocked in two runs to make it 4-2 and open up the game for Allen Park. Devin Basley went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Nolan Zajkowski finished 2-for-2.

“It seemed like the momentum turned once we had the lead,” Allen Park coach Glenn Gulliver said. “We didn’t hit anything for five innings, got a break here and there, and started hitting the ball in the sixth, once we got the momentum.”

Until that point, Allen Park was having no luck getting through Trenton pitcher Zack Perkins, who finished with three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.

“He’s got a breaking ball that he throws well, he mixes his pitches well, worked fast,” Gulliver said. “He threw well, but he may have tired a bit.”

Allen Park was having success on the mound in its own right with starter Nick Arnoldy’s two unearned runs giving him five full innings of work before Jakob Marsee shut the door by closing out the final two innings with five strikeouts.

Gulliver said the rainouts and stacked schedules have made it tough to organize his pitching staff.

“All of these games are coming up in a row; you can’t wear guys out,” Gulliver said. “ [Arnoldy] threw well, but coming in with a fresh arm in the last two innings, it seemed to work out well.”

Trenton is 12-7, 4-5 Downriver.
