Birmingham Groves defeated West Bloomfield 7-3 Wednesday to secure the series win between the two teams. On Monday the teams split a doubleheader, leaving Wednesday’s game a critical one in the OAA White Division.

Both teams are chasing the OAA White title so every game is important from here on out.

The first inning featured an offensive surge from Groves and West Bloomfield. Groves senior Chaise Ford put his team on the scoreboard first with a two-run home run. The very next inning senior Trenton Newby hit a leadoff home run to put West Bloomfield on the board. Junior Ken White tied the score at 2 with a sacrifice fly.

Groves (15-7, 4-3 OAA White) capitalized on West Bloomfield’s defensive miscues and scored a run in the second inning as West Bloomfield committed three errors to take a 3-2 lead.

In the fourth inning Groves took control. Senior catcher and (Kalamazoo College commit George Cutler launched a three-run homer with two outs to give Groves a 6-2 lead. Groves added a run in the fifth inning to take a 7-2 lead.

Chaise Ford was 3-for-4, George Cutler went 2-for-3 with a walk, Keith Schmidt hit a double and scored two runs and Matt Buchand pitched a complete game for Groves.

West Bloomfield’s quest for a comeback came up short as it scored just one run after putting two on the board early in the game. Jack Budde went 3-for-3 with a double for West Bloomfield.

Groves will look to continue its winning ways when it hosts Berkley at 4:40 p.m. Thursday.

Sterling Heights Stevenson 6, Anchor Bay 3: Johnny Tikkanen pitched a complete game, striking out five, giving up two earned runs and three walks. Garrett Navarra had two hits with a home run and an RBI, Austin Owens was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Ryan Lux had two hits and two RBIs for Stevenson (10-12, 6-5 MAC Red).
