Wayne State's Anthony Bass opts to pitch in Japan

Seattle — The Seattle Mariners have released recently acquired pitcher Anthony Bass (Wayne State/Trenton) so he can pursue an opportunity to pitch in Japan.

Anthony Bass is 5-9 for his career with a 4.60 ERA in the majors. He had previous stints with the Padres, Astros and Rangers.

Seattle announced the roster decision Thursday, which leaves the Mariners’ 40-man roster at 39.

Bass was acquired from Texas along with outfielder Leonys Martin in a five-player trade in November as part of Seattle’s busy offseason makeover. Bass appeared in 33 games last season for Texas and had a 4.50 ERA in 64 relief appearances. He was expected to compete for a spot in Seattle’s bullpen and was arbitration eligible.
