It’s a girl! Derek, Hannah Jeter expecting first child
His baseball career over, Derek Jeter is preparing for a new gig: Dad.
Jeter’s wife, Hannah, announced Monday on The Players Tribune that the couple is expecting their first child, a daughter, in May.
Jeter already has a name in mind, Hannah wrote, but the New York Yankees’ legendary shortstop hasn’t sold his new bride on that just yet.
“That’s not the name yet, sweetie,” Hannah said she’s told Jeter on numerous occasions. “Whatever her name is, I know she’ll run circles around him.”
Derek Jeter, 42, a Kalamazoo native, and Hannah Davis, 26, were married in July.
“We want our kids’ lives to be as ‘normal’ as possible,” Hannah wrote. “They’re going to be born into such an extraordinary situation. They’re going to have to be some strong little people. We don’t want them to be defined by their dad’s name — for them, we want him to just be ‘Dad.’ That will be the piece of him they’ll have that the rest of the world doesn’t. It will be special, and it will be theirs.
Jeter, the No. 6 overall pick by the Yankees out of Kalamazoo Central High School in 1992, played 20 seasons in the majors, before retiring after the 2014 season. He won five World Series championships, racked up 3,465 hits and will be a certain first-ballot Hall-of-Famer when he’s eligible.
