Allen Park — The Lions announced the release of six players Saturday afternoon, the first of what will be a wave of cuts to reduce the roster to 75 players by 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Running back Steven Miller was the most notable of the cuts after he spent his rookie year on the Lions’ practice squad in 2013. The other players released were defensive tackle Greg Hickman, wide receiver Conner Vernon, defensive end Kris Redding and guards Alex Bullard and A.J. Dalton.

The Lions also moved rookie wide receiver TJ Jones, a sixth-round pick, to the reserve physically unable to perform list, which will free another roster spot. Jones had been on the active player list.

With the active roster down to 82 players, the Lions need to make seven more cuts by Tuesday afternoon.
