The Tigers and Kansas City Royals haven't been more than 11/2 games apart all season. That won't change, no matter what happens Sunday night in St. Louis.
But, the Tigers can keep pace with the Royals, who own a half-game lead over them in the American League Central after Sunday's 6-0 victory over the New York Yankees, with a series sweep against the Cardinals.
Right-hander Alfredo Simon (4-1, 3.05 ERA) takes the mound for the Tigers against the Cardinals in an 8:05 p.m. game televised on ESPN.
After winning four of his first five starts this season, Simon has turned in back-to-back no-decisions, despite solid numbers: Four earned runs on 11 hits and five walks in 12.2 innings, with eight strikeouts.
Simon is 3-0 lifetime against the Cardinals with a 3.29 ERA in 17 games (three starts).
The Tigers will face Lance Lynn (2-3, 3.27), who won his last start against the Indians on May 12, tossing six shutout innings.
The Tigers carry a three-game winning streak into Sunday's series finale, coinciding with Miguel Cabrera's run of three straight games with at least one home run. He hit his 400th career home run in Saturday night's 4-3 victory.
