Rosenthal: Tigers need to reverse course and sell
Should the Tigers buy or sell?
Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports says the choice is easy -- sell.
Rosenthal offered his trade deadline advice to all 30 MLB teams. He says the Tigers need to cash in on their assets now.
"If it looks like a seller, acts like a seller ... well, hold on, when was the last time the Tigers actually sold?" Rosenthal says. "Owner Mike Ilitch, who turns 86 on Monday, remains hell-bent on bringing Detroit its first World Series title since 1984, and the Tigers are a mere 3.5 games back in the wild-card race.
"Still, the Tigers' rotation ranks 11th in the AL in fWAR, the bullpen dead last. The smart thing to do would be to turn GM Dave Dombrowski loose and see what he could get for David Price, Yoenis Cespedes, etc."
Price has been the Tigers ace; he is 9-2 with a 2.38 ERA and 1.12 WHIP. He is making $19.75 million and will be a free agent in 2016.
Cespedes is hitting .297 with 13 homers and 51 RBI. He is making $10.5 million this year and also is set to become a free agent.
