Cleveland – Jordan Zimmermann did something in his first month with the Tigers that nobody has done since April of 2012.

He won American League Pitcher of the Month honors. Justin Verlander was the last Tiger so honored back in 2012.

Zimmermann went 5-0 in the month and posted a 0.55 ERA. He allowed two runs in 33 innings with 23 strikeouts.

He was the first Tigers pitcher to win his first five starts since Frank Tanana in 1988 and the 0.55 ERA is third-lowest in the club’s history (minimum of 25 innings).

It is the fourth-lowest ERA in April, with a minimum of five starts, in baseball history. Fernando Valenzuela posted 0.20 and 0.21 in 1981 and 1985, and Zach Geinke had an 0.50 ERA in April 2009.

Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez was also honored – American League Player of the Week. He hit .519 (14-for-27) with five doubles, three home runs and eight RBI. It’s the fifth time he’s won Player of the Week honors.

Tigers third baseman Nick Castellanos earned honorable mention with his .440 batting average and .840 slugging percentage last week.
