Upton placed on bereavement list; Tigers calling up Tyler Collins

The Detroit News

The Tigers have placed outfielder Justin Upton on the bereavement list and calling up outfielder Tyler Collins from Triple A Toledo to replace him, according to multiple reports.

The Toledo Blade's John Wagner was the first to report Collins was being recalled.

A player placed on the list must be out a minimum of three games, according to Major League Baseball rules. Players are granted leaves of three to seven games in order to attend to a death or illness of a family member.

Justin Upton will be out at least three games after being placed on the bereavement list by the team on Thursday.

Upton was batting ..235 with nine home runs and 38 RBIs.

Collins, 26, was batting .194 with three home runs and 12 RBIs in his last 10 games at Toledo. Overall, he was hitting .214 (55-for-257) with seven home runs and 30 RBIs at Triple A.

He batted .100 (2-for-20) in two stints with the parent club this season, which included giving an obscene gesture to fans after being booed for misplaying a fly ball in a 7-3 win over the A's April 25. Collins apologized for the incident.
