The Tigers are going to do more than just wear patches on their uniforms to honor late owner Mike Ilitch.

For Friday's home opener against the Boston Red Sox, the Tigers are also going to pay homage to Ilitch with a "Mr. I" design mowed into the center field grass. The outfield tribute will only be for the home opener.

Ilitch bought the Tigers in 1992 and died on Feb. 10 at the age of 87.

The Tigers open the regular season today at the Chicago White Sox (4:10 p.m., FSD) before hosting the Red Sox on Friday (1:10 p.m., FSD).
