Pittsburgh — Another doubleheader, another roster addition for the Tigers.

This time it’s Artie Lewicki, a right-handed starter, who has been summoned from Triple-A Toledo as the Tigers prepare for their third doubleheader in the past 30 days Wednesday against the Pirates at PNC Park.

The first game begins at 4:05 p.m, the second 30 minutes after the final out of the first duel.

The two games, which follow an old-fashioned doubleheader schedule rather than the modern-day, day-night version, were required when Tuesday’s game at PNC Park was washed away by rain.

Lewicki headed for Pittsburgh by way of a recent rules change that allows a 26th player to be added for a doubleheader. The Tigers want protection against wearing out a bullpen that figures to be used mightily during Wednesday’s two games, particularly if extra innings arrive.

Lewicki, 26, pitched for the Tigers briefly in 2017 and has had three starts for the Mud Hens, two of them solid. His last outing was Friday against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre when he worked six innings, allowed three hits and no runs, while striking out seven and walking three.

The Tigers wrap up their Pittsburgh set with a day game Thursday before heading to Baltimore for a weekend series.
