Arlington, Texas — Some postgame injury updates from the Tigers clubhouse:
The results of an MRI on Leonys Martin’s left leg showed a strain in the back of his hamstring. They decided to put him on the 10-day disabled list.
“If we let him play through it, he could definitely pop that thing,” manager Ron Gardenhire said. “It’s tender and it’s swollen. He understands that this time he has to go on the DL. It needs time to rest.”
Martin dealt with swelling in the back of his knee at the end of April and missed just two starts.
“We have to get it straightened out,” Gardenhire said. “He’s in a dangerous spot. It could blow, so we’re shutting him down until he can get the thing rehabbed. It should be 10 days.”
The Tigers recalled Mikie Mahtook from Triple-A Toledo. Mahtook, the Tigers’ starting left fielder, scuffled early in the season, but he’s caught fire. In his last nine games, he’s hitting .343 with a 1.100 OPS.
Right-handed reliever Alex Wilson (plantar fasciitis) got the results of his MRI Tuesday night, as well. Gardenhire said it was ruptured, but not completely torn.
“That’s not the best-case scenario, but it’s OK,” Gardenhire said.
Wilson got a cortisone shot and will begin treatment Wednesday. Gardenhire and Wilson believe he could be ready to pitch at the end of the 10-day DL stint.
“He should be able to pitch with it,” Gardenhire said. “It just depends how much pain he can withstand.”
