The Detroit Tigers made a series of transactions prior to their series finale against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, Calif., on Wednesday.

The biggest news: First baseman/catcher John Hicks is heading to the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to Tuesday, with a right groin strain.

Hicks, batting .260/.312/.403, has played in a career-high 81 games, with Miguel Cabrera lost for the season.

To take Hicks' spot on the roster, the Tigers recalled catcher Grayson Greiner, who will back up James McCann. Niko Goodrum and Jim Adduci likely will get the majority of reps at first base in Hicks' absence.

Also Wednesday, the Tigers demoted lefty reliever Daniel Stumpf, and replaced him with right-hander Artie Lewicki.

The Tigers have lost five in a row heading into Wednesday's 4:10 game.
